This mini-series based on the manga by Eiji Ootsuka was directed for Japanese television by cult legend Takashi Miike (ICHI THE KILLER, AUDITION). It follows detective Anamiya Kazuhiko, a personality of Yousuke Kobayashi, who has Multiple Personality Disorder. Retired after solving the case of a brutal serial killer years ago, Anamiya has been called upon to solve the case of an enigmatic cult whose members have bar codes on their eyeballs. This indicates the gruesome nature of the series, which, in typical Miike fashion, sports as much gore and mayhem as is possible on TV. This third volume includes the episode "Coronation of the Cursed King," which finds members of the cult spontaneously combusting due to a bar-code defect. The hospital where they are taken contains a further menace, as an employee is being instructed in murder by his cyber-girlfriend. In "Soaring Souls and Human Bondage," a police cover-up in the bar code case leads a few investigators to continue the investigation on their own. Meanwhile, the police chief's whole family is menaced, while Anamiya traces a baby kidnapper to a remote hideaway, searching for some answers about his own child's whereabouts.

| Glory Road (2006) F/S | G-Gundam Vol. 6 |
GLORY ROAD is about more than a college basketball team in the mid-1960s playing its way to the championship: it is the true story of a coach and his team taking a stand against discrimination in order to play their best game. As the new men's basketball coach at Texas Western, Don Haskins has one goal: to win. At a time when most Southern universities had few black players on their teams and rarely played more than two at the same time, Haskins recruits an unprecedented seven black players for his team and often has three of them starting. His new additions have played on the streets of the South Bronx between breaks at a Detroit steel company, and added fancy moves with the hope of playing for the Harlem Globetrotters. In addition to adjusting to life at Texas Western in El Paso, the players have to integrate with their white teammates and face discrimination from all fronts: the school administration, donors and alumni, spectators, and random strangers, not to mention other basketball teams. To everyone’s surprise, the underdog Miners take on team after team, making it all the way to the 1966 NCAA championships. In an historic NCAA final game against the University of Kentucky Wildcats, Haskins played the first all-black collegiate basketball starting lineup, in many ways opening new doors for black players everywhere.
James Gartner's feature film directorial debut has impressive performances, great basketball action, snappy dialogue, and just the right amount of humor to complement the seriousness of its main subject. Most important, it pays tribute to an inspirational team and its coach, capturing a moment that changed the sport of basketball forever. Be sure to stick around through the credits to see interviews with the actual team members.

| Dave Chappelle's Block Party (2006) W/S unrated | GH Club Hopping |
Between the sharp comedic mind of David Chappelle and the quirky brilliance of French director Michel Gondry (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND), there's not a single bad moment to be found in this captivating concert documentary chronicling a massive block party that Chappelle threw in 2004 down in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. With acts like the Roots, Kanye West, Jill Scott, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, and a reunion of the Fugees, this will be an automatic favorite for the hip-hop/neo-soul crowd. In its perceptive, celebratory way, the film opens the VIP gates on hip-hop culture and invites everyone in for a funky good time. Gondry's fly-on-the wall camera approach recalls D.A. Pennebaker docs like DON'T LOOK BACK (1967) but the attitude is more laid back and genial; the stars, the band, the locals, the marching band Chappelle buses in from his Ohio hometown, all come together with a rare sense of charmed spontaneity--watching it becomes akin to participation. Chappelle is hilarious, whether handing out golden tickets to old ladies or reciting improv poetry to a bongo beat, and the music is just as good, with highlights being Lauryn Hill's heartbreaking "Killing Me Softly," and Kayne Wests's galvanizing "Jesus Walks." This BLOCK PARTY re-writes a host of rules about what a concert film can be, and it does it with enough love to spill out of the theater and into the neighborhood.

The late great John Ritter stars in this relationship drama as Bill, the guest of honor at a party given for "The Man of the Year." Best known for his role as Jack Tripper opposite Suzanne Somers in the 1970s sitcom THREE'S COMPANY, Ritter went on to act in several films and even star in the sitcom 8 SIMPLE RULES before his unexpected death in 2003. In this film, Ritter shows his serious side, playing a successful businessman whose life is filled with several not-so-funny secrets. It seems fitting therefore, that the party is thrown at the luxurious home of Bill's best friend, in Hollywood, a place preoccupied with appearances. But as guests of the party soon realize, things are not always what they seem. Those expecting a relaxing evening are in for a shock as Bill's secret life becomes exposed. Hardly the man everyone thinks he is, Bill is forced to take a second look at himself and the person he's become. Going home at the end of the night with more than mere goodie bags, the party's attendees leave with the knowledge that nothing will ever be the same again. Shot entirely in digital video, and utilizing the improvisational skills of its actors, MAN OF THE YEAR has many aesthetic and thematic similarities to 2001's THE ANNIVERSARY PARTY.
