Back and Forth (2000) Amy's O (2002)
Filiberto (Gerardo Tarcena) has been working in the United States for three years. Now, he returns across the border to his home in Mexico and attempts to raise awareness of the struggle that the migrant workers in the United States must endure. Speaking out only brings Filiberto more rejection and further alienates him. This social tragedy of the working classes uses Filiberto as a symbol of many disenfranchised, exploited workers who face difficulties from employers every day.

Best-selling self-help author Amy Mandell (Julie Davis) is having a crisis. Her book is about why relationships are doomed to fail yet she has never been in a real relationship, nor even had sex in several years. Her controlling lesbian publicist (Caroline Aaron), bickering parents, and a pair of smugly married friends (Mitchell Whitfield and Jennifer Bradford), all urge her to find a man. To everyone's surprise she falls for a handsome radio "shock jock" (Nick Chindlund) who interviews her on his breast-obsessed talk show. Their unlikely romance calls her role as a feminist--and his as a sexist pig--into question.

The film works best when it's focusing on Amy's intense sexual frustration, which is nicely intensified through a pulse-raising pop-music score and frantic voice overs. Its many ANNIE HALL-style touches (Davis regularly addresses the camera), incessant psychological observations and frenetic camerawork also help keep the film's energy high. It's the second feature from writer-director-producer-star Davis (I LOVE YOU DON'T TOUCH ME) who got her start as an editor of soft-core porn. Vincent Castellanos is a comedic standout in a small role, and Jeff Cesario is good as a sexually frustrated Catholic priest who hears (the Jewish) Amy's steamy confessions.

AKA (2002) Burning Down the House (2001)
Based on the experiences of writer/director Duncan Roy, AKA concerns Dean Page (Matthew Leitch), a lonely, working class 18-year-old from 1979 South London who is determined to escape his humble origins. Fleeing his abusive father, he attaches himself to wealthy Lady Gryffoyn (Diana Quick), an art dealer with strong society ties. After a spell spent as her plaything, Gryffoyn's son becomes suspicious of Dean's motives, and he is on his own once again. Needing another taste of the good life, he flees to Paris, where he passes himself off as Gryffoyn's son in order to get a job and ingratiate himself into the wealthy, gay, French jet set. The DVD also features the theatrical triptych version, in which Roy utilizes a screen split into three simultaneous images to convey this sharp, fascinating portrayal of deception and the class system.

Jake Seiling (John Savage) could be the next Steven Spielberg, but right now he's a nobody. His vision may never reach the big screen either due to his lack of funds and the punch he landed on a major Hollywood executive's jaw. This conundrum needs a problem solver like Arnie Green (James Wilder). Green is a Roger Corman type who has made films under the worst conditions and raised money in a variety of ways. Together, Arnie and Jake cook up a plan to burn the would-be director's house down in order to compile the scratch necessary to make this film. A fading movie actress and ex-lover of Jake's, Brenda Goodman (Joanne Baron), photographs the arson and weasels her way into the scheme as well in this darkly comedic send-up of Hollywood.

Jacqueline Bisset gives a glorious performance in Christopher Munch's third film, THE SLEEPY TIME GAL. She stars as Frances, a twice-divorced former radio deejay trying to pass on her knowledge, including her fascination with Revolutionary War-era New York, to her 20-year-old son, Morgan (Nick Stahl), but he's too concerned with photography and being Goth to listen to her; he'd much rather take a picture of strangers in the street than of a historical landmark. But when Frances contracts cancer, she starts looking back on her life, trying to reconnect with her sons (her other boy lives overseas) while also visiting a past love (Seymour Cassel) with whom she had a child they gave up for adoption many years before.
