One of Japan's most shocking splatter-horror franchises, GUINEA PIG, finally makes its North American debut with the release of two features. In "Devils Experiment," a video tape and a letter are given to the Tokyo police in a small discreet envelope with no return address or postal marks. The accompanying letter tells of an experiment on human endurance and how much the human body and mind can endure before succumbing to death. In "Android of Notre Dame," a scientist's sister has a dreaded heart disease that is slowly killing her. Now, he must find a way to cure her in any way possible. Animal research can only do so much but, on the other hand, a real human body could work wonders. Only for those with strong stomachs, the GUINEA PIG series will leave you numb.

| Fun with Dick and Jane (2005) | Casanova (2005) |
Dick (Jim Carrey) and Jane (Te√° Leoni) are a typical suburban couple. They have a nice house in a development, she works as a travel agent to supplement his white-collar income, and their son's first language is Spanish thanks to spending so much time with nanny Blanca (Gloria Garayua). Things change in the blink of an eye when Dick is promoted to vice president of communications at Globodyne, where he has worked for years. His first order of business: to appear on a popular news show about business and money and lend his magic touch to news of Globodyne's earnings. But Dick doesn't know that Globodyne is about to tank, and in the midst of his interview the situation goes from bad to horrendous and he becomes the scapegoat. In the blink of an eye he is unemployed, his pension is bust, and he can't find a job to save his life. Their front lawn is even repossessed. To make matters worse, Jane quit her job as soon as Dick was promoted, their house has lost value, and their savings was in Globodyne stock. Months later the Harpers find themselves in increasingly dire straits. They resort to paying their nanny with appliances, selling all of their possessions and are facing foreclosure on their house when Dick has a brainstorm: he'll start to steal. Jane joins him, and soon the duo is dressing in elaborate costumes and robbing local businesses and homes. When their final job goes bust, they decide to go for the big heist: scamming Globodyne president Jack McAllister (Alec Baldwin) out of his stolen fortune. Dean Parisot (HOME FRIES) directs this remake of the 1977 film of the same name, which has been cheekily updated to incorporate the phenomenon of white-collar crime. Richard Jenkins and Carlos Jacott round out the cast.

CASANOVA is loosely based on the memoirs of the writer, adventurer, and infamous lover Giacomo Casanova--themselves notably unreliable--and fortunately has no pretensions to historical realism. Instead, it's a witty, lighthearted romantic comedy, which uses its 18th century setting and renowned hero as a jumping-off point for sexy banter and ruminations on love, lust, and freedom. Directed with visual flair and wit by Lasse Hallström--a master of classy period pieces like CHOCOLAT and CIDER HOUSE RULES--the movie was filmed on location in Venice, and the stunningly gorgeous scenery is almost a character in its own right. Heath Ledger, believable and engaging here in a role that couldn't be more different from his powerhouse performance in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, turns on all of his considerable charms here. Abandoned by his mother as a child, Casanova has grown into a lascivious yet oddly innocent young man, who pursues pleasure wholeheartedly and mistakes lust for love. His biggest concern is eluding Italy's puritanical Inquisitors, until he meets Francesca Bruni (Sienna Miller), a beauty who publishes clever pamphlets on women's rights under a pen name. In the time-honored tradition, Casanova is instantly smitten with the one woman in Venice who doesn't want anything to do with him.
The plot provides few surprises, but that is beside the point; the pleasures of CASANOVA are in its warm freewheeling tone, its sumptuous visuals, and the cheerful exuberance of its actors. In addition to Ledger's winning star turn, Lena Olin is her usual mesmerizing self as Francesca's scheming mother, and the reliably excellent Oliver Platt (as Francesca's overmatched fiancé) and Jeremy Irons (as the frustrated head Inquisitor) both deliver deft comic performances.

| Shopgirl (2005) | Fiend |
In adapting his popular novella to the big screen, Steve Martin chooses director Anand Tucker (HILARY AND JACKIE), whose artful eye (along with the film's stunning costumes, dramatic score, and brilliant set design) brings the book's detailed characters beautifully to life. Recalling her breakout role of analytical Angela Chase on MY SO-CALLED LIFE, a luminously brunette Claire Danes plays Mirabelle Buttersfield, a serious young woman (and aspiring artist) from Vermont who has moved to Los Angeles with hopes that, out on the West Coast, her life will finally begin. But Mirabelle's job at the rarely visited glove department of Saks Fifth Avenue and her naturally reserved demeanor make it hard for her to find genuine connections in a place as isolating as L.A. It's with a mixture of her need for human interaction and her lowered expectations that Mirabelle reluctantly accepts the awkward advances of Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a clueless but kind slob she meets at a Laundromat. The opposite of romantic, Jeremy's initial attempts at wooing hardly cure Mirabelle of her loneliness, so when wealthy older man Ray Porter (Martin) asks Mirabelle out with grace and style, she agrees. What follows is a touching look at the disappointment, confusion, and heartbreak that accompanies unreciprocated love, with Martin's script showing particular insight into the experiences of its young female protagonist. In the end, the couple's age difference is of little importance, as the film's main intention is give Mirabelle some omniscient guidance (via Martin's voiceovers) in a time of growth. Through it all, she (like the film) counters reality with the knowledge (and hope) that true love can change everything. While chemically prone to depression, Mirabelle is also a dreamer, with the strong belief that things could be truly wonderful, if only they'd fall into place.

Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) continue their battle against the machines in THE MATRIX RELOADED, the second chapter of Larry and Andy Wachowski's MATRIX trilogy. As RELOADED begins, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus arrive in Zion with new crew member Link (Harold Perrineau), and discover that 250,000 dreaded sentinels are close to launching a massive attack on the underground haven for the liberated minds of humanity. When Neo seeks advice from the prophetic Oracle (the late Gloria Foster), their meeting leads to a sorely outnumbered fight with Neo's old nemesis, Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving). While the sentinels advance on Zion, various battles within the Matrix continue to escalate, culminating in an extended highway chase sequence involving Morpheus, Trinity, more imposing agents, and two new adversaries--the relentless white-clad Twins (Adrian and Neil Rayment).
With RELOADED, the Wachowski brothers delve deeper into both the realm of the Matrix and the apocalyptic, machine-controlled future reality. Initially giving ample attention to both the romance between Neo and Trinity and to the vast underground city of Zion, the film eventually delivers one stunning set piece after another, with the amazing martial arts sequences and jaw-dropping effects of the first MATRIX elevated to even more astounding heights. In addition to the returning cast of Reeves, Moss, Fishburne, Weaving, and Foster, Perrineau and Jada Pinkett Smith make for welcome new additions, and Monica Bellucci offers up an unforgettably sensual appearance. Larger than the original scale on every level, THE MATRIX RELOADED is a thoroughly entertaining sequel that will leave viewers eager for the trilogy's conclusion, THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS.
