| Analyze That (W/S) | Legionnaire (1998) |
ANALYZE THAT, the star-studded sequel to 1999's smash comedy hit ANALYZE THIS, reunites neurotic mobster Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) with his former psychiatrist Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal). The anxious mob boss is about to finish his prison sentence but he is suffering a nervous breakdown behind bars and the only one who can diagnose his ailments is Sobel. After a string of hysterical tests, the Feds grant Sobel permission to observe Vitti as a patient and, much to the dismay of Sobol's wife Laura (Lisa Kudrow), as a house guest. However, Sobel has problems of his own. He's suffering from a severe identity crisis after the death of his father, and Vitti's presence in his suburban New Jersey home has the psychiatrist acting crazy too. In an effort to straighten Vitti out, Sobel decides that the solution is to find him a real, honest job. Vitti tries his hand at several ill-matched professions, and finally finds his dream job as a technical advisor on a SOPRANOS-like cable television show. Everything is going smoothly until Vitti starts to take the show a little too seriously, calling his former mafia cohorts to the set. A raucous comedic event that uses the chemistry between De Niro and Crystal to great effect, ANALYZE THAT is yet another knee-slapping gem from director Harold Ramis.

| G (2002) | In The Mix (W/S) |
Although it might sound unlikely, G brings F.Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY to the hip-hop generation, with a thoroughly modern adaptation of the literary classic. Summer G (Richard T. Jones) seems to have everything a hip-hop mogul could possibly want after building a career for himself as a rap producer. But he still pines for Sky (Chenoa Maxwell), his former lover who he let slip through his fingers. Cleverly locating the film in the Hamptons, where many hip-hop millionaires have taken up residence, Christopher Scott Cherot's film has a glossy MTV sheen to it, but still manages to stir the emotions that lie at the core of Fitzgerald's novel.

R&B star Usher makes an assured screen debut in this mix of mob movie and romantic comedy. Chazz Palminenteri co-stars as the friendly don who recruits family friend Darrell (Usher) to play bodyguard for his daughter, Dolly (Emmanuelle Chiriqi). She and Darrell have been friends since they were kids, but the seven years since they last saw each other have changed things. She's grown into a headstrong young law student with a yen for yoga and a smug yuppie boyfriend (Geoff Stults); he's grown into an ultra-smooth chick magnet with dreams of starting his own record company. They're destined for each other, but there's not only the racial issue in their way--someone's trying to take over the family business via treachery and bullets, and Darrell's right in the thick of things. When the interracial romance isn't heating up the screen, there's plenty of raucous comedy supplied by Anthony Fazio as Dolly's pseudo-gangsta younger brother, Kevin Hart as Darrell's loudmouthed co-DJ, and a bulldog with an unfortunate digestion problem. Director Ron Underwood takes his time going around the more edgy turns in the script, giving the actors room to stretch out and get comfortable in their characters and surroundings, and helping the film transcend its more formulaic elements (it's an obvious nod to the 1992 Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner chestnut, THE BODYGUARD). Best of all, Usher proves his game extends to the big screen, where he displays plenty of debonair warmth and easygoing charm.
