 Notes Full Frame The Farrelly Brothers (THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, DUMB & DUMBER) take a slight departure from their signature breed of over-the-top, gross-out humor and opt instead for sensitive restraint with this genuinely sweet love story. Credit is due in part to the writing team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (SPANGLISH) who adapt Nick Hornby's popular British novel, moving it to Boston and exchanging the protagonist's obsession with soccer for an all-consuming love of baseball. Ever since his first childhood visit to Fenway Park, easygoing schoolteacher Ben (Jimmy Fallon) has been in love with the Boston Red Sox. When he meets a successful workaholic named Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore), he warns her that being such an avid fan has been a problem in his past relationships. On the brink of turning 30, Lindsey is eager to make what seems like an otherwise promising romance work, and she agrees to go with Ben to opening day (of the eventful 2004 season when the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years).As baseball season proceeds, the truly obsessive nature of Ben's hobby is revealed, and a love triangle is set up in which baseball plays the role of the other woman. Lindsey's feelings for Ben are put to the test again and again as his love for the game threatens to outweigh his feelings for her. While the film's structure is pretty typical of a romantic comedy, FEVER PITCH offers quirky characters that ring true. Fallon and Barrymore display a genuine chemistry and Fallon proves (after leaving SNL) that he can pull off the romantic lead. With the exception of Yankee fans, FEVER PITCH should appeal to anyone who has ever really loved another person (or a pastime).  The Shaw Brothers studio was known for its excellent production values and commitment to quality in an era when films in Hong Kong were made quickly and cheaply. Part of the genius of the Shaw studio was the manner in which it matched up its various stars into fruitful and lasting combinations. Perhaps the most famous and successful of those combinations was the Five Venoms--Lo Meng, Sun Chien, Chiang Sheng, Kuo Choi, and Lu Feng. In FIVE KUNG FU DAREDEVIL HEROES, the Five Venoms unite to take on a corrupt military general who has murdered one of their own. The film features a great deal of acrobatic work from the team of actors, three of whom were alumni of the Peking Opera, and a plotline that involves intrigue and suspense as opposed to the usual directness of the genre. It was directed by Shaw studio veteran Cheh Chang, who was one of the leading martial arts directors of the 1970s and an influence on the later generation of filmmakers including John Woo.  Grace Is Gone DVD Reviews: Iraq War tearjerker "Grace Is Gone" never gained traction at the box office, grossing a paltry $107,435 worldwide following a late 2007 release. The film has its faults, certainly, but deserved a better fate. The Weinstein Co. is now hoping that those who didn't see "Grace" in theaters -- and that's practically everyone -- will catch the DVD and share in the grief of this devastated family. Semi-Pro: Let's Get Sweaty Edition DVD Reviews: The two-disc "Let's Get Sweaty" edition of this year's middling comedy "Semi-Pro" advances a recent academic theory: Even if the movie itself isn't very funny, the extras on any Will Ferrell DVD guarantee plenty of laughs. Hamburger Hill DVD Reviews: When Vietnam films flooded the market following the mammoth mid-‘80s success of "Platoon," "Hamburger Hill" was lost in the shuffle. The gritty and sporadically powerful ensemble piece is now being re-released on DVD in a special 20th anniversary edition, although the film’s 20th anni was actually last year. |
